What Even Are The Australian Dietary Guidelines?

Do you know what the Australian Dietary Guidelines are? Are you eating the correct nutrients?


The guidelines aim to promote the benefits of healthy eating. It aims to reduce the risk of diet-related disease and improve community health and wellbeing.


Following these can be a great start in improving your approach to nutrition and your overall lifestyle.


These are the guidelines below:


1. To achieve and maintain a healthy weight, be physically active and choose nutritious food and drinks to meet your energy needs

  • Children and adolescents should eat sufficient nutrients to grow and develop normally. They should be physically active everyday and their growth should be checked regularly

  • Older people should eat nutritious foods and keep physically active to help maintain muscle strength and a healthy weight




2. Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from these 5 food groups:

  • Vegetables/ legumes/ beans

  • Fruit

  • Grains (mostly wholegrain or high fibre cereals)

  • Lean meats and poultry, fish, tofu, nuts, egg, nuts and seeds

  • Milk, yoghurt, cheese and/ or their alternatives

  • Drink plenty of water



3. Limit intake of foods containing saturated fat, added salt, added sugars and alcohol



4. Encourage, support and promote breast feeding



5. Care for your food; prepare and store it safely
