Lets Chat: New Years Resolutions

New Years is often the time when people make drastic promises about the next year. Commonly fitness or body related. But people often fail their resolutions or give up after a few weeks/ months. Why? Because they were either unrealistic, made the person go from 0-100 real fast or they weren’t actually what the person wanted in the first place.

For example,

I want to lose 10kg (weight loss goals are extremely common after the festive season): Ask yourself why you want to lose 10kg. Is it because you want to be fitter? Do you want to be fitter so you can spend more time with your children? Do you want to spend more time with them because they’re growing up fast and you want to have a better relationship when they’re older? Do you want to be fitter because you want to feel confident wearing a bikini? Do you want to feel confident because you want to try new things, express yourself fully and not hold back in life?

This person’s first thought was that they wanted to lose 10kg. But when you dive deeper, that’s not what they want at all. They actually want to develop a loving and strong relationship with their kids and feel confident enough to try new things and grow as a person. The goals then become more than just weight loss. They become meaningful to each individual and they figure out their WHY. That’s where the magic happens and that’s what will ultimately create change.

And also, start small. Little steps each week/ day is more effective over time that going full steam ahead on the first day.

I personally love New Year’s and making resolutions, although it has only been recently that I have figured the above. I am proud that this year my ‘body/ fitness goals’ are around strength and confidence rather than just ‘being thinner’. And my other goals around finances, personal, mindset etc are specific to me and all have meaning. I look forward to challenging myself in 2021.

So if you have made a New Year’s Resolution, good on you! But just make sure it is the right one.
