Every felt like you are so busy that you become overwhelmed and have increased sense of failure? We live in a very busy, noisy and overloaded society but that doesn’t mean we forget how to switch off and look after ourselves.
These are some tips that can help you combat feelings of overload:
1. Focus on one thing at a time
Multi tasking can produce poorer results. You are splitting your attention between multiple tasks which can ultimately produce poor quality performance. Focus on one task, finish it and then move on to the next one.
2. Work like an athlete
Athletes train extremely hard but they also spend a great deal of time on recovery which is just as important. 90 minutes is the ideal length to focus on a project before you should have a stress break. So work hard but be mindful of giving your mind/ body a break when it needs one.
3. Allow for thinking time every day
Allow time everyday to let your thoughts flow and be creative. Explore all of your ideas.
4. Welcome change
Be flexible with yourself and your daily routines. Be open and welcome new changes to your life and you will be able to adapt to anything.
5. Become a better listener
Listen to yourself, work colleagues and family. Don’t overload yourself with unnecessary thoughts, negative feelings and tasks. Listen to what is really important to you.
6. Re-define meaningful accomplishment
You may be setting very high expectations of yourself and are ultimately disappointed with your efforts each day. What tasks are meaningful to you and which would you be really proud and happy to have achieved? Change your achievement expectations and you will find that you can achieve much more.
7. Think of what you have instead of what you want
This can keep you focused on the positive aspects of your life and keep you motivated.
8. Ask yourself ‘what is really important?’
Are you busy because you commit yourself to too many unimportant and irrelevant things? Choose tasks that are important to you and what you absolutely need to get done. Everything else does not matter.
9. Take breaks outside
Don’t get stuck inside for too long! Connect with nature, take short walks, get a fresh perspective and some vitamin D. Breathe in the fresh air.
10. De-clutter
De-clutter your mind, desk, bedroom, living area etc. Create a clean and open space to work. This can ensure greater focus.
